As a workaround, tried it again after removing the background in PPT, and no flattening was needed (i.e., printed immediately). Am assuming the the overlap between background and content constituted multiple layers of images that needed 'flattening' for each slide, taking a long time and generating a file too large to print.
Zoom Problems Some PDF viewers produce slight text or image blurs when they display documents at less than 100 percent display size. Resolve the blurriness by viewing at the actual resolution. Zoom problems can also end up embedded in the document. This most often happens with Web resolution images, such as screen captures. Use only screen captures at 100 percent of the original resolution. Crop them instead of resizing and avoid using JPG compression, which can add blurriness or other viewing artifacts.
